I've talked about the idea of picking up Gary Sheffield's $13 million option for 2007.
I still think it's early to do so, but it's very good that Brian Cashman told Sheff that barring any crazy happenings, they would indeed pick up his option. He also does not have a midseason deadline like Bernie Williams did last year, which is a boost.
Anyways, this post was sparked by Mike and his on-the-button comments:
"there's three questions that jump right out. is he slowing down? will he be worth $13M next year? will he still be productive in '07? my answers are yes, probably not quite and i see no reason why he wouldn't be. overall, unless something happens this season to change my mind he'd probably be the best option in '07 so i'd probably pick it up after the year."
He was good for 34 HR and 123 RBI as well as being one of the top hitters in the game with runners in scoring position. His defense is slipping badly, but he plays in a small right field, which somewhat negates the impact.
