Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Monday, February 10, 8 p.m. on FOX.

That's when the final four episodes of the season, and very possibly the series, will air.
For those that aren't aware, that's directly against THE WINTER OLYMPICS!!!
Thanks, FOX. Really. Now, about 250,000 people will watch the show instead of the previously terrible 4-5 million.

So here goes, I'm going to urge people to watch. Not to save the show, but to get a last chance of how funny it could be. It's four episodes, so I don't expect you to watch them all.

For the converted, I know, I've promoed the end of the show before.
But there's even more concern now. While there's the chance Showtime will take on the show, it's a conditional offer that's far from finalized.

But give it a chance. While it's been slightly uneven this season due to the Charlize Theron saga, that simply means that it's still the funniest show on TV (although "My Name Is Earl," "The Office" and the return of "Scrubs" give NBC the funniest block on TV; I'm not knocking the sublime "Family Guy" either. But that's a show that's even more enjoyable, maybe like "AD," when you think it's going off that air).
The third season of "AD" has so much good stuff, including the self-mocking, Fox-mocking, and progressively more hyper, more spastic, more brutal humor (incest is too tame now, let's have a character get involved with the mentally retarded, but have the British accent disguise that fact) -- humor that is no-holds barred and won't give in, even if it means cancellation.
My favorite? The episode where GOB, Buster and the surrogate imitate Godzilla, and then later, the fake mini-village built to impress the Japanese businessmen is destroyed by Tobias (in costume), who then is attacked by George-Michael in a jet pack. Incredible to watch.

So watch the damn show. Buy the DVDs, if you can. And if you're tired of me talking about it, then I really do apologize. But you knew what you were getting into with me.
