EDIT #2: Bum in the comments has a good point. This is a big and unexpected win I discuss, but it's against the D-Rays. How the mighty have fallen.
Jason Giambi juiced a ball around the right-field foul pole in the 8th, erasing a one-run deficit (A-Rod had just knocked a tough outside pitch up the middle) and giving the Yanks a much-needed victory over the suddenly potent Devil Rays.
Derek Jeter, though, grounded into a double play in the 7th, nullifying a bases-loaded situation. The second night in a row he has DPed the Yanks out of a comeback despite an otherwise good game. I don't know what the problem is, but I think in those situations, he needs to be looking to hit the ball in the air. His late-inning failures perhaps have just been magnified by fans this year; I'm not inclined to believe that there's anything to worry about when he comes up in a tough situation.
It's just part of being the franchise player on the biggest team in sports.
EDIT: I neglected to offer kudos to Jaret Wright, who as I've discussed, is terrible and cannot be expected to do well. He gave up four in the first but shut the D-Rays down after that. Recovering from a disasterous first inning is almost harder for many pitchers than protecting a one-run lead late; the psyche writes off the whole game as a failure. Wright's apprenticeship in Atlanta may have helped him deal with the early struggles tonight.
