Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

And so go the Yanks. Unless they pull of another comeback today (it's now 6-5 as I write this then go to work), they'll go down to defeat, as Randy Johnson again loses to a vastly inferior opponent. Thanks RJ. When all the waiver claims kick butt, you go out and show your age.
At least Giambi is still hitting (thank goodness he developed fundamentals before he did steriods), and Jeter seems to be out of his slump.

Couple things: 1. Twins fans are pretty despondent over the loss of Torii Hunter, and I can't blame them. It hasn't looked like their year anyways. But there's still hope, more than the O's have at this point.
2. Buddy Groom correctly called out Torre for only ever using 3 pitchers in his bullpen. He's done it for years (Nelson, Rivera, Wetteland; Nelson, Stanton, Rivera; Quantrill, Gordon, Rivera; and lately Sturtze, Gordon, Rivera). However, Buddy Groom should realize that he's been wildly inconsistent by month, and his 4.64 ERA isn't awe-inspiring. Also, he's 40 years old and his career ERA is 4.91. So he's an old, sucky pitcher who's actually pitching to his below-average norm. Of course Torre doesn't like you. Shut up and retire.
