Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

...despite 6 runs allowed. Alas, he only made it through 4.1 innings, and the Yanks had to score 11 in order to squeak out a win. Ruben Sierra, that RBI machine if little else, drove in the tying and go-ahead runs. He now has 25 RBI in 113 plate appearances, a stellar 4.5 or so PAs per RBI. His OPS is .805, and if he can sustain that, it would be only the 2nd time since 1991(!) that he had a .800+ OPS. Unfortunately, he hurt himself on that hit tonight, so he'll probably head to the DL.

But back to Brown. He gave up 3 in the first, continuing his trend, and 2 HR overall. Amazingly, despite his terrible job this year, he's only given up 4 HR in 70 innings. But he's allowing a .337 batting average overall, and a .446 average in the first inning. While they need him simply to show up for now, this is not a Yankees team that can win in the playoffs. Not at the moment, at least.
