Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Viva El Birdos
This St. Louis Cardinals blog details the recent run of Chris Carpenter (won his last six starts with three shutouts, including beating Clemens the other day), and how in many ways it compares to the best 6-start runs of Hershiser and Drysdale's shutout streaks, as well as Gibson from 1968 and John Tudor from 1985.
Carpenter lags slightly in innings pitched and complete games/shutouts, but has given up far fewer hits and easily has the most strikeouts. In other words, he's close, if not already at, a historic run. And people say there's no pitching anymore.
