Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Damn, someone just took to the national stage. Mr. Consistent, jacking 24(!!) in one round and still with enough juice without being on the juice to bounce back and knock off Big Papi and the hometown favorite, I-lost-30-pounds-suspiciously Rodriguez.

Of course, Garrett Anderson won the derby a couple years ago and nobody notices him much more than before. Maybe that's because he has a terrible on-base percentage and has good HR and RBI totals partly through sheer amounts of ABs.

Ruben Sierra trivia: He actually shared the Home Run Derby title in 1989 with Eric Davis. It was an odd, four-man per league shortened version setup, and the AL lost, but both hit 3 HR to lead overall.

Anyways, the All-Star game was the typical result: The vastly more talented league, the AL, won again. Nice to see Kenny Rogers get rocked like a cameraman, as well as see Mariano get the one-out save, destroying the very talented Morgan Ensberg. Also, it was nice to see LaRussa lose at something else.
