Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

ESPN.com
Schilling is an old man; so is Wells. The Red Sox have the same problems in this aspect (ancient starting pitching) as the Yankees. But while Wells' injury was surprising in that he never gets hurt unless it is his back, Schilling has repeatedly gotten hurt after big seasons.
1992-93: 30-18, 3.20 ERA, 17 CG, 1993 NLCS MVP, 1993 WS Game 5 shutout
1994-95: Only 30 starts combined

1997-98: 32-25, 22 complete games, 619 K
1999: 15 wins, but only 24 starts

2001-02: 45-13 record, 609 K
2003: 2.95 ERA, 194 K, but only 24 starts

2004: WS win, 21-6
2005: 1-2, 7.13 ERA, on the DL (for now)

So honestly, it's not a surprise. At best, he can give you 2 years in a row without injury. Obviously, it was a gamble worth taking for the Sox, given last year.
