Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Well, already Kevin Brown and Kris Benson, two overpaid underachievers, are on the disabled list. For Benson, who has a strained pectoral muscle, it may be the only time people care more about his breasts than those of his wife.

Of course, last night was the epic matchup of David Wells and Randy Johnson, predictably won by the Yankees (who torched Wells the first time he left the Yanks several years ago). What will be interesting to see is if the Red Sox can be fired up and not complacent, as is the tendency with any defending champion. Last year was the only time I feared the Red Sox in my lifetime, because they were actually that good, but also because they also believed they were. This year, they'll have to prove it all over again.

Back to the Mets briefly, Pedro was dominant at times but had a huge lapse in the Adam Dunn home run. Expect more and more for his starts against any team to become like his Yankees starts the last 2 years: a few innings of dominance, but way too many pitches and ultimately wearing down too early.
