Well, I had Kansas and Gonzaga in my Final Four. So my bracket is destroyed. My only salvation will be if somehow Oklahoma State can win it all.
So with that disclosure out of the way, let me say a few things about Kansas and Gonzaga.
Gonzaga has won only 3 games now in the last four tournaments. The Cinderella performances upon which they built their reputation (1999 Elite Eight loss to champion Connecticut and Sweet 16 appearances in 2000 and 2001) are a distant memory. A No. 2 seed last year, they were destroyed by Nevada in the second round. Three years ago, they lost in the first round after being ranked No. 6 in the final AP poll. This year, they lose to a Texas Tech team that is very tough and has some big upset wins, but was also very inconsistent. No surprise that Texas Tech also scored a win over Kansas this year.
Bottom line, Gonzaga has been overrated for a couple years now, and has as many tourney wins as UAB and Kent St. in the same time span. And nobody is saying those programs are top-10 caliber programs.
As for Kansas, it's abundantly clear that Roy Williams was not the problem. When a team has as seniors its three best players (Langford, Miles and Simien), it should not lose the types of close games it lost down the stretch this year and into the first-round game against Bucknell. Plain and simple, they were losers. Sure they made a title game, but did everything possible to lose it to a champion (Syracuse) that's undeniably the weakest champion in recent years. Last year, they again lost to a team that wanted it more (the brilliantly inconsistent Georgia Tech).
As for the NBA prospects of the Kansas seniors, I don't know if any are really good enough to begin with. But you surely can't use the argument of intangibles and clutch play as a point in their favor.
